Reiki Healing for Animals

What is Animal Reiki?
Reiki is a non-invasive, painless and stress-free complementary therapy which is totally safe for use on animals.  It involves a specifically trained practitioner gently placing their hands on or near the body, with animals it is often carried out from a distance as there is no need for pressure or manipulation.

How does Reiki work?
People and animals are born with the natural ability to heal themselves, which is suppressed when they become energetically out of balance. As with human Reiki, animal Reiki works by the practitioner channelling a flow of universal life energy through their hands to the animal. This is used to restore the energy flow around the body and re-balance the energy centres, commonly known as the chakras.  In doing so, the animal becomes calm and relaxed, thus stimulating its natural healing ability.

How can Reiki help?
Reiki can help animals in a myriad of ways.  With healthy animals, Reiki can help maintain health on all levels.  Reiki can enable the healing of physical illness and injury as well as problems on an emotional level. It is a powerful tool for behavioural issues and emotional healing following trauma, abuse, neglect, fear and trust issues, reaching deeply into even the most damaged spirits.

For anxious, stressed or highly strung animals, Reiki induces deep relaxation and stress-reduction and, over time, can reduce the tendency toward nervousness. Reiki can accelerate rehabilitation after injury, surgery or illness and is very effective when used alongside conventional veterinary care, whereby it enhances treatment and can lessen any side effects.

The Treatment
It is best for an animal to receive a Reiki treatment in an environment which is familiar and comfortable, so that it can feel safe and relaxed. It is best to use a quiet space to give the treatment where the practitioner and animal will not be disturbed.  A familiar place, where they can move around safely without constraints, such as a small room in the animal's home is best. The practitioner will generally travel to the animal's environment to give a treatment since most animals are stressed in an unfamiliar environment and are much more relaxed and at ease at home.

Every animal has a different character and therefore will respond to the Reiki energy in a slightly different way.  The pace of the treatment will be guided by the animal, but will generally last about 30 minutes.

Veterinary Approval
Reiki is not intended to replace conventional veterinary care and only your Veterinary Surgeon can diagnose ailments and give advice.  Owners are required to seek approval from their vet prior to their pet receiving a Reiki treatment.  This is usually accomplished by a simple phone call to the Veterinary Practice.
