About Reflexology
What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is a non-intrusive, holistic, complementary health therapy. It works on the principle that each part of the body is connected through energy channels to specific reflex points on the feet, lower leg, hands, face and ears. These channels can easily become blocked through stress, emotions, trauma or illness, causing the body to function less efficiently. Through the application of pressure to the reflex points using specific thumb and finger techniques, reflexology aims to release tension and stimulate the flow of energy throughout the body to bring about self-healing and normalise the functions of the body.
Reflexology has its roots in ancient times. In the tomb of Ankhmahor (“Physicians Tomb”) at Saqqara, Egypt, which dates back to approximately 2330BC, images are painted on the wall depicting people receiving hand and foot therapy.
How can Reflexology help you?
Reflexology is suitable and safe for people of all ages and can bring relief to a wide range of acute and chronic conditions; it is deeply relaxing and can help reduce stress and tension. The nervous system is calmed, as over 7,000 nerve endings on the feet are all stimulated during a treatment, circulation and elimination is improved, energy levels can be increased and it gives a sense of overall well-being. Many people use it for help with specific symptoms or conditions including: Stress, Anxiety, Depression, Headaches, Sciatica, Back Pain, Joint Pain, Muscle Pain, Fibromyalgia, Poor Circulation, Lymphoedema, IBS, Digestive Disorders, Fertility, Pregnancy, PMT, Menopausal Symptoms, Sports Injuries, Post-Operative Recovery and Cancer Support; as well as for relaxing and counteracting stress. Many doctors, consultants and healthcare professionals recognise it as a well-established, respected and effective complementary therapy.
The Treatment
The first treatment begins with a consultation about your health and lifestyle; the reflexologist will discuss your medical history to establish any underlying health problems. They will also ask what you wish to gain from reflexology therapy. Loose clothing should be worn for comfort and to enable easy access to the lower leg. You will then be required to remove your shoes and socks before lying on a warm couch in a quiet, peaceful, safe space enabling you to feel comfortable and at ease.
During the treatment the practitioner will apply gentle and/or strong pressure and massage to the feet, toes, ankles and lower legs, working on specific points and areas. This eases stiffness and tension, and breaks down any deposits that may have gathered between the joints and ligaments. Reflexology is not painful, nor is it ticklish, but some areas of the feet may feel more tender than others depending on the area being worked. Sensitivity varies from person to person. A reflexologist will not diagnose but may be able to sense imbalances in the body as they work. If for any reason certain areas of your feet cannot be treated, the corresponding area on your hands can be treated instead.
After a session, your feet will feel warm and you should experience a general feeling of calm and relaxation, you may even feel sleepy.
Your first session will last about 75 minutes, allowing time for the consultation and for you to enjoy the treatment without feeling rushed; subsequent treatments will last about an hour.
How often do I need a treatment?
The benefits of reflexology can be experienced after just one treatment. For a positive effect on long term health problems, it is most likely that a course of treatments will be required. We recommend having treatments on a regular basis to support you in maintaining good health and a feeling of well-being. We have various packages tailored to suit your needs, but can create a personal and flexible plan for you if required.
