About Reiki
Origins of Reiki
Reiki, pronounced ‘ray-key’, is a Japanese word meaning ‘Universal Life Force Energy’, an energy which is all around us and flows through all living things. Thought to be have been practised for thousands of years, Reiki was re-discovered in the late 1800’s by Dr Mikao Usui of Japan. Dr Usui made his findings after researching ancient Buddhist documents on the power of healing. He went on to teach his discoveries and traditional Usui Reiki has been passed from Master to student ever since, arriving in the West during the 1960’s, where it is recognised as a Complementary Therapy.
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a very gentle, non-invasive healing technique, carried out by a specifically trained practitioner placing their hands on or over a person, animal or plant, with the intent to channel Reiki energy. It can also be sent as absent healing, over a distance and even through time. Reiki is not a form of massage and no manipulation takes place, the practitioner will simply place their hands on or near the body, as the energy flows through them.
Reiki is suitable for everyone including animals, regardless of age or level of health and can be used alongside all other therapies and conventional medical treatments. After a treatment you should feel calmer, more peaceful and in control, having a more positive outlook on all aspects of life. Reiki works on all levels, physically, mentally and emotionally. It can also help to aid spiritual growth and self-development.
Reiki differs from other forms of energy healing because of the attunement process given by a Reiki Master, which attunes the practitioner’s body to a higher vibration, thereby allowing a clear channel for the energy to flow. The personal energy of the practitioner is not affected – they are not passing their own energy to the recipient, but channelling Reiki energy. Reiki has no religious attachments.
Why would I need Reiki?
People and animals are born with the natural ability to heal and repair themselves, which is suppressed when they become energetically out of balance. When energetic blockages build up, due to stress in one form or another, the flow of vital energy around the body is disrupted. This impacts on the effectiveness and efficiency of all systems of the body and the immune system is also weakened, leaving them vulnerable to illness and disease.
How does Reiki Work?
Reiki works by clearing energetic blockages and restoring the natural energy flow around the body by re-balancing the major energy centres, commonly known as the chakras. This is achieved by a Reiki practitioner channelling a flow of universal life force energy through their hands to the recipient, which stimulates their natural healing ability, giving them a calming, relaxing and peaceful experience.
What are the benefits?
Reiki is beneficial in helping with an overall feeling of well-being or a specific injury or illness such as: Stress, Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, Asthma, Eczema, Headaches, Sciatica, Back Pain, Joint Pain, Muscle Pain, Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, IBS, Digestive Disorders, Sports Injuries, Post-Operative Recovery and during mentally and emotionally difficult times such as bereavement.
Our experience is that Reiki is extremely effective in helping newly diagnosed cancer patients manage their fear. When used alongside conventional medicine in cancer support and palliative care, we have found it can also help patients to cope better with the physical and emotional effects of their condition.
